On The Business Side, Battles Still Continue In Phoenix

from Stephen Brunt of the Globe and Mail, The league, though, is apparently unwilling to settle for its Pyrrhic victory and let bygones be bygones. It is now suing Moyes for allegedly breaking side deals in which he pledged not to take the team into bankruptcy, and not to relocate it or sell it to anyone who would. Whether or not the NHL has a case is pretty much beside the point (though it?s at least interesting to consider whether the owner of a business can ever really surrender the right to take it into bankruptcy, or whether a handshake agreement could indeed supersede the NHL?s own bylaws on franchise relocation). The lawsuit will go on, probably with a Moyes countersuit added to the mix. Eventually, someone will tire of paying the lawyers, and a settlement will be reached. Probably the league will get back a tiny fraction of the dough it has frittered away buying the team out of bankruptcy and operating it at a considerable loss this season. Perhaps the NHL will even pass on a little of that windfall to former Coyotes minority owner/head coach Wayne Gretzky ? though you?d think that it might have simply found a way to discreetly take care of its most famous son before his estrangement from the NHL hierarchy became so obvious. more

  • Boring Hockey
  • from Jack Todd at the Montreal Gazette, After surviving two of the most exciting battles you will ever see against Washington and Pittsburgh, the Canadiens have found themselves locked in an exercise in tedium. Since they were reduced to the role of spectators during the second period Saturday, the Habs have to know how boring it was. If the first three contests were something less than classics, Saturday?s game made my New NHL look very much like that Bad Old NHL. With two teams trappi

  • The Man Who Wants To Buy The Coyotes
  • from Stephanie Myles of the Montreal Gazette, The best day of Steve Stotland?s business and sports life was Dec. 5, 2000 - the day he thought he and his partner had acquired the fabled Canadiens. The worst days came after that, when the franchise ended up going to George Gillett. But if a mountain man from Colorado can come to Montreal and be an exemplary NHL owner, why can?t a Montrealer go to the Arizona desert and do the same? Stotland says that the Phoenix Coyotes are a wo

  • Halak Hooked On Chocolate Milk
  • from Dave Stubbs of the Montreal Gazette, Jaroslav Halak seems in the mood for confession, so it?s worth a shot: ?What?s your greatest weakness, Jaro? Low stick-side? Five-hole? High glove-side?? ?No,? the Canadiens goaltender says without a heartbeat?s hesitation. ?It?s chocolate milk. Since I was a kid, I?ve had to have it every morning. Half a litre now, at home and on the road. ?When I started walking, I had a chocolate milk in my hand. When I was a baby, I had it in my bottle.? Hal
